Transforming the fresh root into an infused oil – or ‘liquid gold’ as I like to call it – is not only really easy and cheaper than buying it ready-made, it also increases ginger’s versatility as a culinary ingredient and a natural medicine.

Ginger root can be used for cooking in both savory and sweet dishes, but health-wise it’s commonly taken to help ease nausea, indigestion, diarrhea, gas and it sometimes works for morning sickness.

Homemade ginger oil

When transformed into an oil, you can use ginger to deliver subtle flavor to your cooking. Medicinally it can be used in a number of different ways, including:

  • Topical pain-relief
  • Eases motion sickness
  • Eases morning sickness
  • Eases digestive issues
  • Can help treat food poisoning and intestinal infections
  • Promotes natural blood circulation
  • Can lower the risk of hypertension
  • Helps reduce the risk of blood clots and arteriosclerosis
  • Helps to lower bad cholesterol blood levels

If you’re interested in making your own ginger oil, it will take a little over a day if you’re going to air-dry the ginger, or it can easily be achieved in around four hours if you use a dehydrator.

Will you make this recipe? I’d also be really interested to know if you already use ginger medicinally (both the how and what for) so let me know in the comments section below.

I followed the recipe exactly using coconut oil and the end result turned out to be dark amber instead of gold. Hope it is still effective in reducing knee pain. Thanks

      hi,
it is well known that ginger contains substances that act exactly in the same way as ibuprofen. In case I suffer from tendon pain\inflammation or over-exercise, or low back pain, I also consume it as tea: from a thumb-thick part take around 1 cm, slice thin, and brew hot boil water over it. cover the cup with a cap and let it sooth for 15..30 min. Very effective!

Yes its just as effective the darker color i noticed depends on what way you choose to dry it. And also if you choose to peel it 1st or not. Another way is if your heat is too high when infusing. I normally do it in a mason jar immersed in water half way up in crock pot but only on warm… not low… basically you want that in the window sun kinda warm. Doing it in a jar vs open reduces the oxidation since it is enclosed in airtight jair.
I’ve noticed dehydration the natural air way causes more browning due to oxidation.

Can we dry in the sun? And does it take 2 hrs to cook? It’s a long time, just concerned the cost of gas. Thanks

  • Renee Jun 3, 2021 @ 17:31

Why dry the sliced ginger first?

    • Dee Dec 5, 2021 @ 15:53

To remove the water/moisture from the root, water and oil don’t combine without an emulsifier. You can buy dried ginger if fresh doesn’t work for you.
