Transforming the fresh root into an infused oil – or ‘liquid gold’ as I like to call it – is not only really easy and cheaper than buying it ready-made, it also increases ginger’s versatility as a culinary ingredient and a natural medicine.

Homemade ginger oil

Please note: The content in this blog post is given for informational purposes only and is not intended to be used as a substitute for the consultation, diagnosis, and/or medical treatment of a qualified physician or healthcare provider.

Ginger root can be used for cooking in both savory and sweet dishes, but health-wise it’s commonly taken to help ease nausea, indigestion, diarrhea, gas and it sometimes works for morning sickness.

Homemade ginger oil

When transformed into an oil, you can use ginger to deliver subtle flavor to your cooking. Medicinally it can be used in a number of different ways, including:

  • Topical pain-relief
  • Eases motion sickness
  • Eases morning sickness
  • Eases digestive issues
  • Can help treat food poisoning and intestinal infections
  • Promotes natural blood circulation
  • Can lower the risk of hypertension
  • Helps reduce the risk of blood clots and arteriosclerosis
  • Helps to lower bad cholesterol blood levels

If you’re interested in making your own ginger oil, it will take a little over a day if you’re going to air-dry the ginger, or it can easily be achieved in around four hours if you use a dehydrator.

Will you make this recipe? I’d also be really interested to know if you already use ginger medicinally (both the how and what for) so let me know in the comments section below.

Why dry the ginger before making the oil? I would think there would be more benefit from the raw ginger.

    • Kevin Schmidt Jun 20, 2019 @ 16:57

Good question! Mainly because oil and water don’t mix… so you’re removing most of the water by drying the ginger first. The ginger oil will last longer too.

Is it OK to sun-dry the ginger slices?

    • Kevin Schmidt Jul 29, 2019 @ 20:14

Sure, as long as the conditions are right and you don’t introduce any contaminants. The sun is a great natural dryer!

  • Barb Willsie Aug 21, 2019 @ 9:39

I was wondering IF ground ginger – already dried – would work in this recipe? IF so, how much would you suggest in the oil? Thanks, Barb

    • Kevin Schmidt Aug 22, 2019 @ 11:39

Hi Barb, I haven’t tried it but I would encourage you to use fresh ginger. It’s simple to make and cheap to buy fresh ginger root.

      • Shirley May 1, 2020 @ 15:29

Barb, there is another side to this question. I dried thin slices ahe ground up in my mortar then slow simmered.

    • Kris May 18, 2023 @ 15:49

I tried making ginger oil using powdered ginger and it was very hard to strain out the powder. If that doesn’t matter to you then it does work. It might be a bit rough on the skin.

  • Ms. M Sep 25, 2019 @ 17:51

Hello I would like to ask what if you donโ€™t have dehydrator is it ok to put it in the oven ? For how long ?
    Just curious if itโ€™s possible
Thank u and more power !

    Ms. M

    • Kevin Schmidt Sep 27, 2019 @ 17:06

Hi Ms. M, If you don’t have a dehydrator, just leave the slices on a rack for 24 hours to air dry. That’ll be the easiest and next best option. Thanks!

  • Dakshina Sep 28, 2019 @ 1:51

  • Deborah Rhule Jan 4, 2021 @ 10:13

I made mine with coconut oil. Smells delightful, but the coconut oil solidifies after the process. I don’t mind, but I can hardly call it a ginger oil after it sets. But I suppose it will do the job I want it for. Using it for my joints (knees) and hair growth
