Homemade Oat Milk

Jump to Recipe

Looking for a homemade oat milk recipe that’s quick, simple and cheap to make? Well, here you go…

You can use this homemade oat milk on cereal, in hot drinks, smoothies, milkshakes, in baking… basically anywhere that you would use animal derived milk.

We won’t get all hung up on the fact that we are calling what is essentially an oat drink “milk”. We’ll leave that battle to the marketing and lobbying departments of the dairy industry; we know they have a huge job on their hands to try and convince people to still feel good about their products.

As more and more people start to become aware of the cruelty involved in the dairy industry, not to mention how bad dairy is for a human’s health, the popularity of plant-based milk alternatives is skyrocketing.

In the US, sales of plant-based milk products were up by 9% in 2018 whereas cow milk sales were down by 6% in the same period.

The trend has continued across the pond, with plant based milk sales increasing by 30% since 2015 in the UK.

Almond and soy milk are by far the most popular plant-based milks, but people are also starting to sit up and take notice of oat milk too.

The great news is that it’s really easy to make your own oat milk at home, and it costs a fraction of what the shop bought stuff does.

Need another reason to try oat milk? Oats have long been touted as a health food and for good reason; they are one of the healthiest grains on Earth.

Not only are they gluten-free, they are also an important source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber. Plus they are also higher in protein and fat than most other grains. Basically, they are a nutrient-dense superfood.

You’ll need a high-speed blender to make your milk, plus a really fine sieve, cheesecloth or nut milk bag. And if you try this and like it, you could also try experimenting with other grains such as quinoa which would give you a serious protein punch.

Will instant oats work instead of rolled oats?

Hi Jess, I don’t think you’d have a problem using instant oats 🙂

For people who want an unsweetened plant milk, it works fine to just use oats. I’ve been making oat milk in my Vitamix for the last two years, and it’s saved my budget and my life.

Yes, it’s certainly much cheaper to make your own. My vitamix is buzzing almost daily with something plant-based!
